About Us

Cambridge University Rugby League Football Club is a competitive Rugby League club that competes against other university sides in the BUCS South Easter Tier 1 league, the BUCS knockout championship, and against O*ford in the annual Varsity Match.

While we are a serious, competitive club, we are also one that appreciates the merits of inclusivity and welcome players of a range of abilities. The level of ability of our players range from new beginners to international representatives. At the top level our players have been selected to represent England Community Lions, England Students RL and train with semi-pro teams, such as Hemel Stags and London Skolars. Nevertheless, we appreciate that rugby league is not available as a college sport and therefore we are the first port-of-call for those that want to be involved. We have a huge emphasis on a “One Club” mentality and value each and every player at our club. We also understand that coming along to a university club with little or no experience may be a daunting prospect, yet we encourage prospective players to come on down to training where they would be welcomed into the club.

The club also holds several events outside of our competitive season, including both friendly matches and social events. Our Old Boys match, usually held in early February, is a season highlight for the side and a tough test, with the score within 6 points for the past 4 years.

We hold regular team socials throughout the season (normally the evening of a Wednesday game) and also feature a social-packed pre-season in late September. This year we are planning to hold a formal dinner to honour our Old Boys in November of Michaelmas term.

The club also offer an annual “micro-tour” to our players. In the past, this has featured trips to Europe, as well as a club night out to Leeds as part of a trip that featured professional training with Super League outfit Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Frequently asked Questions

No! A lot of our current players had not played rugby league before joining, and decided to cross codes from union after starting their studies at Cambridge. Our club is very experienced in helping lads adapt their game, from a solid rugby union player to a great rugby league player.

Field sessions will run on Tuesdays (*time TBC*) and Sundays (*time TBC*) at St John’s Playing Fields. Strength and conditioning will then be on a Friday evening at 5:30pm at the University Sports Centre.

After a year without BUCS due to Covid-19, we are delighted to announce that CURLFC are back in BUCS action on Wednesday October 20th, with our first fixture away at Oxford Brookes. BUCS games will run every Wednesday in Michaelmas and Lent term, with 10 league games plus a national cup to compete for!

Definitely! So long as you bring the right attitude to training and are open to meeting new lads. Everyone at the club loves new joiners, from freshers to final year undergraduates to postgraduates. We have a great mix of colleges, degrees and personalities and the social side of the club is growing from strength to strength!

CURLFC are not Hawks’ Team of the Year for nothing! We offer a great platform for players to both enjoy the game of rugby league and learn and develop their skills week in week out. We also offer arguably the best social scene of any sports club at Cambridge, with weekly socials and swaps with other sports clubs, which allows our players to bond off the pitch. CURLFC compete in first and second team Varsity Matches at the end of the year, a guaranteed highlight of your time at Cambridge.
